Access is the hard part
On almost every extension, the hard part is not the digging, it is getting the machine to the dig in the first place. The excavation sits at the back or side of the house, and the only route to it is a side gate, a passage between houses, or a gap along a boundary fence. Bring a machine that is too wide and it stops at the gate, leaving you to barrow every bit of spoil by hand. That single mistake can add days to a job and blow the labour budget.
Measuring up before you book
Getting a machine to the back of the house is a measuring job before it is a hiring one. Find the narrowest point on the route and you already know most of what decides the machine, because the gap down the side of a house is often tighter than it looks. The catch is that the gate is rarely the only squeeze. Gate posts, a water meter box, a soil pipe, a low soffit over the passage, a step up off the drive or a tight turn at the back can all stop a machine that measured fine at the gate. Walk the full route it has to travel, not just the gate, and note the tightest point anywhere between the unloading spot and where the footings go.
Ground conditions along that route matter as well. A firm path or patio takes a tracked machine in its stride, but a soft lawn or a freshly laid drive may need boards down first to spread the weight and avoid marking. Once you have the narrowest measurement and a couple of photos of the access, the hire desk can tell you which machine will make it through and what is worth moving out of the way before delivery day.
